Wine and Champagne Trivia
-
10 % of the world's production of sparkling wines comes
from the Champagne region of France.
-
20% of the sparkling wines in the US are Methode Champenoise.
-
Most champagnes are fermented in stainless steel.
-
About 80% of champagne produced is non-vintage. This means it
is a blend of several years of harvest.
-
Until around 1850, all champagnes were sweet.
-
Champagne is put into heavy bottles with pushed up bottoms
to hold the pressurized wine. This is another reason why
champagne is more expensive than still wine.
-
Dom Perignon champagne is aged 6-8 years before it is out
on the market. This is attributed to being the first Methode
Champenoise - he said "I am tasting stars".
-
According to Greek mythology the first Champagne glass was
molded from the breast of Helen of Troy - Coupe.
-
Centuries later, Marie Antoinette, Queen of France, decided
it was time to create a new champagne glass. She had
glasses molded to her own breasts, which changed the shape
of the glass entirely, since Marie was a bit more endowed than
Helen.
-
Today the flute is most commonly used because champagne
does not lose its bubbles as quickly as in the old-fashioned
models.
