FWSO Performs The Symphonic Dances From West Side Story
In its exciting season finale, the Fort Worth Symphony
Orchestra will perform Bernstein’s lively Symphonic Dances from the Broadway
hit West Side Story. Bernstein extracted nine sections from his original
score to create the Symphonic Dances, which include two of the most popular
songs from the show: “Somewhere” and “Maria” (in the Cha-Cha section). This
engaging tale of young love against a backdrop of gang warfare remains one
of today’s most memorable musicals on both stage and screen. For those who
love West Side Story, these performances are the perfect opportunity to
experience the music as never before.
The concert will also feature violin virtuoso Augustin
Hadelich, who returns to perform Paganini’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in D
Major, Op. 6. The concerto is a dazzling display in technical prowess,
and Hadelich – winner of the 2006 International Violin Competition of
Indianapolis – last performed with the FWSO at Carnegie Hall to rave reviews.
Turina’s lively Danzas fantásticas, Op. 22, which draws deeply from the
musical traditions of Spain, provides a heart-pounding finale. On Saturday
and Sunday, the concert opens with Garrido-Lecca’s Arcano. Music Director
Miguel Harth-Bedoya conducts.
The concerts take place May 15, 16 and 17 at Bass
Performance Hall. The concerts start at 7:30 p.m. Friday, 8 p.m.
Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Learn more about the music at Symphonic
Insights, featuring host Shields-Collins “Buddy” Bray, one hour before
each concert in the audience chamber. Friday performances have no
intermission, slightly shorter programs (Arcano is not included Friday)
and the concerts end at approximately 9 p.m. so patrons are free to enjoy
the rest of the evening on the town.
Lauded as a “brilliant violinist” in the New York Times,
Hadelich made his Carnegie Hall orchestral debut in January 2008,
performing the Brahms Double Concerto under Harth-Bedoya with cellist
Alban Gerhardt and the FWSO. He returned in March 2008 for his hugely
successful recital debut in Stern Auditorium. In his third appearance at
Carnegie Hall in 2008, he performed Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 with
the New York String Orchestra under Jaime Laredo on Christmas Eve.
Highlights of his 2008-09 season include debuts with the
Liszt Chamber Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Pacific Symphony, and
Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, and recitals with the La Jolla Music Society and
Fortas Chamber Music Concerts series at Kennedy Center. He will also
participate in an East Coast tour with artists from the Marlboro Music
Festival. A captivating recitalist, Hadelich has appeared at the Chamber
Music Society of Detroit, Chautauqua Music Festival, Walter Reade Theater
at Lincoln Center and the University of Texas at Austin, and in collaboration
with Midori at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater. The 2007-08 season marked his
professional recording debut with two CDs for Naxos: the complete violin
concerti of Haydn and the complete solo violin fantasies of Telemann.
Born in Italy in 1984, the son of German parents, he holds
a diploma (summa cum laude) from the Instituto Mascagni in Livorno, Italy,
as well as a graduate diploma and the coveted Artist Diploma from the
Juilliard School, where he was a student of Joel Smirnoff.
Tickets are $10-$78 and are available online at
www.fwsymphony.org and by telephone at 817-665-6000. Discounted rates
are available for groups of 10 or more. Call 817-665-6500, ext. 150
for details.

generous support of the Web Maddox Trust and season sponsors American
Airlines, Park Place Motorcars Fort Worth, Renaissance Worthington
Hotel and the Star-Telegram. Promotional support is provided by Star-Telegram
and WRR Classical 101.1FM.

Oak Ridge Boys To Perform With FWSO

Oak Ridge Boys
Theirs is one of the most distinctive and recognizable sounds
in the music industry. The four-part harmonies and upbeat songs of the
Oak Ridge Boys have spawned dozens of country hits including “Elvira,”
“Bobbie Sue,” “Dream On,” “Thank God For Kids,” “American Made” and more.
Don’t miss these Grammy Award-winning artists in concert with the
Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, June 20, 2009 at
Bass Performance Hall.
The Oak Ridge Boys represent a tradition that goes back to 1943,
before Hank Williams had a career. The original group, based in Knoxville, began
performing country and gospel music in nearby Oak Ridge where the atomic bomb
was being developed. They called themselves the Oak Ridge Quartet, and they
began making regular Grand Ole Opry appearances in the fall of 1945. In the
mid-1950s they were featured in Time magazine as one of the top drawing gospel
groups in the nation.
By the late 1960s, with more than 30 members having come and
gone, they had a lineup that included Duane Allen, William Lee Golden, Noel
Fox and Willie Wynn. Among the Oaks’ many acquaintances in the gospel field
were Joe Bonsall, a streetwise Philadelphia kid who embraced gospel music
wholeheartedly, and Richard Sterban, who was singing in quartets and holding
down a job as a men's clothing salesman. The four became friends, and when the
Oaks needed a bass and tenor in the 1970s Sterban and Bonsall got the calls.
The group remained a highly popular mainstay on the gospel circuit, and it was
there they refined the strengths that would soon make them such an
across-the-board attraction.
Their gospel sound had a distinct pop edge to it, and while it
made for excitement and popularity, it also ruffled purist feathers and left
promoters unsure about the Oaks' direction. Then, in 1975, the Oaks were booked
to open a number of dates for Roy Clark, whose manager was floored by their
abilities. He suggested they start singing country songs, they took his advice,
and the result was a breakthrough.
Within a year, Paul Simon tapped them to sing backup for his
hit “Slip Slidin' Away,” and they went on to record with George Jones, Brenda
Lee, Johnny Cash, Roy Rogers, Billy Ray Cyrus and others. They have appeared
before three presidents, produced one of the first country music videos, took
part in the first headline tour of the USSR, and have become one of the most
enduringly successful touring groups anywhere.
The group's first personnel change in many years occurred in
1987 when Steve Sanders, who had been playing guitar in The Oaks Band, replaced
William Lee as the baritone singer. In 1995, Steve resigned from the Oaks and
exactly one minute after midnight on New Year's Eve, Duane, Joe and Richard
surprised the packed house at Holiday Star Theatre in Indiana by welcoming
William Lee on stage and back in the group.
The Oaks’ high-energy stage show remains the heart and soul of
what they do, and they refine it several times a year, striving to keep it fresh
well into the future.

FWSO Signs Contract With Metropolitan Classical Ballet
The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra announced today that it
will provide live music for the Metropolitan Classical Ballet during the
2009-10 season.
The FWSO has been hired for productions in the fall and
spring as well as the company’s annual Nutcracker performances. The value
of this contract is an estimated $85,000.
The two organizations have worked together before, most
recently in performances of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf for the
Performing Arts Fort Worth Children’s Education Program over the past
several years.
“We are thrilled to expand our partnership with the
Metropolitan Classical Ballet,” said Ann Koonsman, FWSO president.
“Artistic Director Paul Mejia is an extraordinary choreographer whose
dance melds perfectly with the musical score.”
“For me, music has always been a major part of the ballet
experience,” Mejia said. “Its importance is unparalleled. My co-artistic
director Alexander Vetrov and I have great respect for the Fort Worth
Symphony Orchestra and look forward to working with the musicians once
again. We think this will be a wonderful collaboration.”
The FWSO and Texas Ballet Theater announced earlier this year
that their contract would not be renewed due to financial issues.
“We are very much looking forward to our creative collaboration
with the Metropolitan Classical Ballet,” Koonsman said. “While we miss our
relationship with Texas Ballet Theater, it is possible that that cherished
partnership will be renewed at some point in the future.”
The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra has been serving the
community and North Texas for more than seventy-five years. Its world-class
musicians and internationally recognized music director, Miguel Harth-Bedoya,
have become known for their outstanding performances of symphonic and pops
music with a wide-range of talented artists. One of the largest performing
arts organizations in the city, the Orchestra reaches more than 250,000
people each year in and around Fort Worth. A leader in education and
community engagement, the FWSO is the only orchestra in the state to
participate in Carnegie Hall’s award-winning Weill Music Institute
Communities LinkUP! program. Adventures in Music, the Orchestra’s
education and outreach program, inspires, educates and entertains
more than 65,000 children each year.
Founded in 1997, Metropolitan Classical Ballet is regarded
as one of the most successful ballet companies in Texas. Artistic Directors
Paul Mejia and Alexander Vetrov are well-recognized names in ballet.
Mr. Mejia, a former principal dancer with the New York City Ballet who
danced principal roles in many Balanchine ballets, carries on Balanchine's
style and artistic vision through his acclaimed choreography. Alexander
Vetrov, former leading male principal dancer with the prestigious Bolshoi
has the distinction of being the recipient of the Honored People's Artist
of Russia, the highest honor given by the Russian President. Mr. Vetrov still
maintains close connections with the Bolshoi today. Company dancers are
valued for their superior technique and strong artistic personalities.
Since 1999, the Company has performed at the Nancy Lee and Perry R. Bass
Performance Hall in Fort Worth. It reaches over 30,000 individuals each
season. The Company’s repertory has an emphasis on simplicity, style and
pure classical tradition, elements that make the Company uniquely classic.
