Growers Usher In Summer With Fresh-picked Produce At The Farmers Market

Their day starts at 4:00 a.m. Farmers from across the region head to their fields and groves to collect the day’s harvest. By the time the sun comes up, independent growers will be set up and ready for patrons at the Fort Worth Rail Market’s Farmers Market. Opening Friday, May 30, the Farmers Market will operate every weekend through October, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Hours are 7:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Rail Market is located two blocks east of the Fort Worth Convention Center.

“What’s unusual about our Farmers Market is that we’ve got the actual growers bringing in their freshly-picked produce every weekend, rather than a distributor purchasing perishable goods, like at a grocery store,” commented Jackie DeBolt, market manager. “From Parker County peaches to Brazos blackberries, to 1015 Texas sweet onions and fresh, shelled black-eyed peas, these are the local Texas farmers dedicated to offering the freshest produce at our ‘real’ Farmers Market.”

In cooperation with the Intermodal Transportation Center, the Farmers Market will spread out under the parking pavilions at the train station, and reach toward the south end of the Fort Worth Rail Market. In addition to produce, the Farmers Market will feature specialty items, such as goat’s milk soaps and lotions, herbal oils, vitamins and minerals, handcrafted jewelry, art, and live plants.

To liven things up, local jazz quartet Jared Stone will be performing on Friday at Noon, and on Saturday and Sunday at Noon, patrons can enjoy the sounds of the Stockyards Opry. Also on Saturday, health educator Monica Brown will be teaching how to transform your family’s eating habits with a healthier approach. Her demonstrations will include making nutritious breads, cinnamon rolls, Italian flat bread, whole grain tortillas, delicious pancakes, and more, all from freshly milled grains. Monica is scheduled from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on May 31.

The Rail Market’s unique shops and restaurants offer a variety of products and tastes. With Santa Fe Produce, Hot Damn Tamales!, Spiral Diner, Suppenhaus, Pizza by Design, Plant Source, Dominion Farms, Go Texas gift shop, Café de Paris bakery, and British Attic, patrons are bound to satisfy their shopping and dining appetites.

The Fort Worth Rail Market is a public initiative project of the Downtown Tax Increment Finance District and Downtown Fort Worth, Inc. It is located in the historic Santa Fe Freight House, converting 40,000 square feet into a European-style market with on-site merchants, exclusive office space and a community meeting room. Leasing and general inquiries should be directed to market manager Jackie DeBolt at 817.335.6758, or by visiting online at www.fortworthrailmarket.com.
