Fire Station No. 1, the building that houses this colorful exhibit, is
a part of Fort Worth history. This is the site of the city's
first city hall. It contained the mayor's office and other city offices
on the second floor of the building. The volunteer fire
fighters with their hook and ladder wagon and Bill, their cougar
mascot, occupied the first floor. The present structure replaced
the original building in 1907. The building was in continuous
use as a fire station for more than a century.

It started with the 35-acre Greer Island
Nature Center, and currently the 3,500-acre
refuge offers interpretive center, hiking
and self-guided nature trails. A herd of Bison
intermingled with white-tailed deer are often
seen. Prairie dog town offers an excellent
opportunity to observe these little animals
in their communal setting. Open Tues.-Sat.
9am to 5pm, Sun., noon to 5pm. Ten miles
northwest of downtown (2 miles past Lake
Worth bridge).
